Why Scaling And Cleaning is Important
Getting teeth cleaned by a dentist is a common procedure. Most of the people simply opt for the treatment because they have yellow teeth and want their shiny teeth back. But if we talk about the awareness of the treatment, it is really low. When asked to most of the patients visiting the dental clinic they had no idea about the reasons why they should get their teeth cleaned or how often should it be done. To understand all this, we have to understand the danger our teeth is exposed to.
Plaque
Plaque is made of bacteria, their by products and the substances that they feed on. When the food stays in the mouth for a ling time, the bacteria is likely to attack at a faster speed. This results in plaque in the mouth. Plaque is a soft, sticky and is white coloured. It can be removed with the help of proper brushing and flossing. If it is left unchecked, the bacteria will release toxins that will irritate the gums and produce acids causing tooth decay.
Calculus
Calculus is a hard, calcified build up that can be removed only at the dentists. It is nothing but effectively hardened plaque. When the plaque is not treated on time, the minerals in the saliva start accumulating on it, making it more calcified. Brushing, flossing and gargling, nothing is enough to remove the tartar from the mouth. Therefore, it is a condition in which you must consider dental procedure. This process is what we call scaling. The tartar is first removed using a tool and the residual is later brushed out leaving no sign of plaque back in the mouth.
Staining
Staining makes your teeth look ugly and that is all. They do not have any inverse impact on your health. Consuming things that stick to the mouth like tea, coffee, red wine or tobacco can permanently stain your teeth. There are various whitening toothpastes in the market that can be considered for it. If the stains have been there for a long time then they you can even consider having teeth whitening done from the dentist. This is where people mostly consider getting their teeth cleaned.
How often a person should consider getting their teeth cleaned and scaled depends on the following:
- The hygiene routine we follow- Brushing and flossing is something that you absolutely cannot skip. Following a proper oral health routine can reduce the chances and damage and hence reduce the need to be cleaned.
- How fast can the calculus accumulate
- How frequently do you take things that can stain your teeth
